15 SUVs launching in Indian market in 2022

up2022 is going to be a busy year for all the carmakers of India, all of which are readying up brand new SUVs across all the segments. Following are all the SUVs – ranging from sub-compact to midsize SUVs – from mass-market carmakers which will mark their arrival in the Indian car market in 2022:

Sub-compact SUVs

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

The new second-generation Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will drop the Vitara moniker and will just be called “Brezza”, which has been confirmed through some of the spy pictures of the SUV. The new Maruti Suzuki Brezza will have a completely different design in and out, which makes it look much more modern than the current model. The new version of the SUV will be more feature-rich, as it will get LED lights all around, a wireless charger and even a sunroof. However, it is expected to get the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny

In a dealer meet, Maruti Suzuki has already confirmed that it will be launching a new lifestyle off-roader SUV in the sub-compact SUV space, which in all likelihood will be the Jimny. However, it is yet not clear whether the new India-spec Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be the globally-sold three-door version or a new five-door version. However, what is confirmed is it will get a four-wheel drive as standard and will share the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with both manual and automatic gearbox options with the all-new Brezza.

Hyundai Venue facelift

The Hyundai Venue has been giving a tough fight to the current Vitara Brezza and seeking a possible threat to ride in competition, it is also going to get its first major makeover. The Hyundai Venue facelift has already been spied doing test runs in South Korea and will get noteworthy visual changes in and out. While the powertrain and transmission options will be retained, the new Venue will get major design alterations like a parametric grille with LED headlamps, sleeker LED tail lamps and new alloy wheels. It will also get a few additional features like ventilated front seats to keep up with the competition.

Toyota Urban Cruiser facelift

The current Toyota Urban Cruiser is a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza with a different front grille and front bumper. Given that the Vitara Brezza is set to receive a generational change, the Urban Cruiser will also get a major revamp in all likelihood. Just like the current version, the new Toyota Urban Cruiser will resemble the new Brezza, though it might get a slightly tweaked front profile to make itself look different. Under the hood too, it will retain the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with both manual and automatic transmission options from the Brezza.

Citroen C3

Citroen entered the Indian car market in 2021 with the niche C5 Aircross. However, the French carmaker will affirm its presence in India with a more volume-oriented product in the form of C3. The new Citroen C3 has already been previewed through official pictures and videos and features a fresh and funky design language in and out which should appeal to the younger buyers. While not many details are revealed as of now, the new Citroen C3 will get a 1.2-litre petrol engine in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, just like how it is available in Europe.

New Maruti Suzuki SUV

Apart from the new Brezza and Jimny, Maruti Suzuki is also working on a crossover styled SUV for the Indian car market. This new SUV will co-exist with the S-Cross and feature a curvier design language, unlike the upright stance of the Brezza and Jimny. However, unlike the new Brezza, this new sub-compact SUV will be based on the Heartect platform of the Baleno and will be sold through the NEXA chain of outlets. Like all the new Maruti Suzuki offerings, this new SUV will be a petrol-only model and will get upmarket exterior and interior design. This new sub-compact SUV will directly take on the Honda WR-V.

Compact SUVs

Hyundai Creta facelift

The facelifted second-generation Hyundai Creta has already debuted in the Indonesian car market, and needless to say, this new version will arrive on the Indian shores very soon. The new version of the Creta will come to India sometime in the second half of 2022 and will come with a new jewel-like parametric grille, re-profiled LED headlamps and tail lamps, new upholstery and added features like full-TFT instrument console from the Alcazar, 360-degree parking camera and ADAS features. The list of engine and transmission choices will remain unaffected.

New Honda SUV

After evaluating the HR-V for a long time, Honda has scrapped that idea for a smaller and more affordable compact SUV to take on the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. This new SUV is expected to be based on the Honda RS midsize SUV concept and will be based on the platform of the Honda City sedan. This indicates that it will be offered with both 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines from the City, and will come with a spacious cabin and premium appeal in and out. Expect this Honda SUV to arrive in India by the end of 2022.

New Maruti Suzuki SUV

Maruti Suzuki has significantly lost its market share in the premium compact segments to newer rivals from Hyundai and Kia. To gain the lost ground, Maruti Suzuki is secretly working on an all-new premium compact SUV which will sit above the new Brezza and will be bigger in dimensions over the latter. Expect it to be a more premium and feature-rich SUV to be on par with the new-generation rivals, which have raised the bars too high when it comes to offering premium and upmarket appeal. While details about this new SUV are scarce, expect to be powered by a new-generation powertrain.

New Toyota SUV

Maruti Suzuki’s new premium compact SUV is jointly developed in associated with Toyota, so Toyota will also come with its version of the same. However, unlike the Urban Cruiser, this new SUV will have an entirely different looking exterior and interior. This association will be much like how different the Volkswagen Taigun is from Skoda Kushaq, despite being based on the same platform. While the overall design and feature list will vary between the two SUVs, the Toyota SUV will be powered by the same engine and gearbox options as the SUV from Maruti Suzuki.

Midsize SUVs

Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus

After the TUV300 made a comeback to the Indian car market in a restyled avatar and a new name of Bolero Neo, its longer wheelbase version, the TUV 300 Plus, will also return this year. The new version is likely to be called Bolero Neo Plus and will feature the same styling changes in and out as its smaller version. It will come with a longer wheelbase to accommodate a more spacious third row of seats in comparison to the jump seats of the Bolero Neo. The 2.2-litre diesel engine will be the mainstay of the Bolero Neo Plus.

Mahindra Scorpio

A speculative render of the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio

The all-new generation Mahindra Scorpio is going to be the most anticipated SUV for 2022, as it has been doing test runs for years now. The Scorpio is undergoing the final rounds of testing and is expected to arrive in the first half of 2022. With a completely new design in and out, the new Scorpio is going to be more premium and feature-rich than its current version. Like the Thar, the new Scorpio will be offered with both 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines with both manual and automatic transmission variants.

Hyundai Tucson

While Hyundai launched the facelifted version of the third-generation Tucson only in 2020, the new fourth-generation model sold globally will be replacing it in the first quarter of 2022. The new model has already been spied doing test runs on the Indian roads and features a radical departure over the current model with its ‘sensuous sportiness’ design language. The powertrain options – 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel with both manual and automatic gearbox options – will be retained in the fourth-generation model.

Jeep Meridian

Seven-seater SUVs based on five-seater SUVs is the most popular formula in the current times, with Tata, Hyundai and MG having offerings using this formula. The next name to join this list is that of Jeep, which is readying up a new three-row version of the Compass SUV. Touted to be called Jeep Meridian, the new SUV will be renamed version of the Jeep Commander, which has already debuted in the Brazilian car market. Compared to the Compass, the Jeep Meridian will have mildly revised front and rear profiles, new interior upholstery and a few additional features. However, the engine options will be retained from the Compass.

Skoda Kodiaq

Skoda has already begun the production of Kodiaq in India and is all set to launch it in India in January 2022. Compared to the previous version, the new Kodiaq is getting a tweaked front profile and a couple of new features. It has also parted ways with the old 2.0-litre diesel engine for a new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Superb sedan. In the Kodiaq too, the engine will produce 190 PS of maximum power and 320 Nm of maximum torque and will be paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
