2022 Cupra Formentor price and specs

Priced from $54,990 drive-away, Cupra’s Formentor performance SUV will offer buyers four model grades, including a potent 228kW all-wheel-drive flagship, and a frugal plug-in hybrid.

Pricing and specifications for the 2022 Cupra Formentor mid-size performance SUV have been announced, with the first orders to be accepted starting early June.

Cupra’s flagship model in Australia and globally, the Formentor is the company’s first standalone model without a Seat variant (what Mercedes-Benz is to Mercedes-AMG) – though it’s still underpinned by the same MQB front- and all-wheel-drive platform as its Leon and Ateca range-mates.

Four variants will be available in Australia, each closely related to its siblings: the entry-level Formentor V, GTI-powered VZ, plug-in hybrid VZe, and range-topping, all-wheel-drive VZx.

Prices start from $54,990 drive-away for the V, rising to $58,490 drive-away for the VZ, and $66,490 drive-away for the VZx. The VZe is the only model without nationwide drive-away pricing (RRPs plus on-road costs are also available), with these priced from $63,990 to $66,990 drive-away.

Cupra models in Australia will be sold online, with the aid of a network of approximately 12 showrooms. Fixed, non-negotiable pricing will be the norm for the brand.

Powering the entry-level Formentor V 4Drive is a 140kW/320Nm version of the VW Group’s familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for a 7.1-second 0-100km/h time.

The mid-tier Formentor VZ ups outputs from the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder to 180kW and 370Nm – but despite losing all-wheel drive, it records a spritely 6.8-second dash from zero to 100km/h.

The performance flagship of the range is the VZx, which adds back the all-wheel-drive system, and employs an Audi S3-specification version of the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with 228kW and 400Nm – enabling a 4.9-second 0-100km/h dash, with the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Meanwhile, the Formentor VZe plug-in hybrid pairs a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder with an 85kW electric motor, 13kWh battery and six-speed dual-clutch automatic for 180kW and 400Nm combined, a 7.0-second 0-100km/h time, and about 50km of electric driving range.

Standard features on the entry-level model include LED headlights and tail-lights, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, tri-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, cloth seats, and a full suite of active safety features.

The Leather and Power package available across the range brings leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat with memory, power tailgate, Beats sound system and memory mirrors. A panoramic glass sunroof is also optional across the range.

The features in the Leather and Power package are standard on the range-topping VZx, as well as unique Petrol Blue trim, a Supersport steering wheel, and black side skirts. The VZx can be optioned with Brembo front brakes, with 370mm front discs replacing the standard 340mm rotors.

Oddly, the 360-degree camera previously advertised to be available on the VZx will not become available until Model Year 2023 production begins later this year, with a rear-view camera standard instead. Drive has contacted Cupra Australia for further details.
