  • More affordable Excite variant arrives, joining Essence
  • Both variants share dual electric motors, 63km EV range
  • Priced from $46,990 drive-away

The 2022 MG HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid range has been expanded with a more affordable Excite variant, on sale now.

First announced in late 2021 as the Vibe – before an internal branding change to become the Excite in early 2022 – the new Excite version of the HS Plus EV (formerly HS PHEV) lowers the starting price of MG’s plug-in hybrid SUV to $46,990 drive-away.

While that price is $2000 lower than the fully-loaded HS Plus EV Essence flagship, said Essence variant could be had for $46,990 drive-away one year ago – with that figure since bumped up by two rounds of price rises.

To make its lower price possible, features cut from the Excite compared to the Essence include 18-inch wheels (with 17s instead), LED headlights, front fog lights, leatherette upholstery (with PU/PVC trim instead), front sports seats, power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, and 360-degree camera.

However, features retained include a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heated seats, keyless entry, electric driver’s seat, and a full suite of active safety technology, known as MG Pilot.

Both MG HS Plus EV variants share their mechanicals, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder with a 90kW electric motor and 16.6kWh battery for combined outputs of 189kW and 370Nm.

Drive is sent to the front wheels with the help of a 10-speed automatic transmission. MG quotes a 6.9-second 0-100km/h time, a combined fuel economy claim of 1.7 litres per 100 kilometres, and 63km of electric driving range according to lenient NEDC testing.

The 2022 MG HS Plus EV Excite is on sale now, with the same seven-year warranty as the Essence variant.
