2022 MG ZS EV facelift here by July, current model nearly sold out in Australia

MG’s popular electric SUV is almost sold out – but there’s a facelifted model en route, with more power, additional range, a new look and more technology.

The facelifted 2022 MG ZS EV electric car is due to arrive in Australian showrooms by the end of June, with increased driving range and technology – but prices are likely to rise to match.

Revealed last October, the facelifted ZS EV – currently Australia’s best-selling electric car, behind the Tesla Model 3 – gains a choice of two larger batteries overseas, plus a new look, revised interior styling, and more technology through a new 10.1-inch touchscreen shared with other MG models.

However, to account for the upgrades, prices are likely to rise beyond the $44,990 drive-away of the current model – which could place its title of Australia’s cheapest electric passenger car at risk, amid China’s incoming BYD Atto 3 electric SUV, and the existing Hyundai Ioniq Electric ($49,070 before on-road costs).

Buyers keen on the current model are advised to get in quick, as only a handful remain in the dealer network, and the model has disappeared from MG Australia’s public website.

Said $44,990 drive-away model is powered exclusively by a 44.5kWh battery and a 105kW/353Nm electric motor, good for 263km of claimed WLTP driving range, and a 0-100km/h time of 8.2 seconds.

The facelifted model upgrades to two new battery packs – led on price by a 51kWh ‘Standard Range’ unit, paired in the UK to a 130kW/280Nm electric motor driving the front wheels for a 8.6-second 0-100km/h time, and 320km of claimed WLTP driving range.

Upgrade to the 72kWh Long Range battery and buyers revert to a 115kW/280Nm electric motor, but are offered an identical 8.6-second 0-100km/h time, and an increased driving range claim of 440km.

Connect to a DC fast charger and MG says a five to 80 per cent charge will be covered in 40 minutes, or a 30 to 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes.

Other highlights of the facelifted ZS EV include a new look with a restyled front fascia, automatic LED headlights, new 17-inch alloy wheels, a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7.0-inch instrument display, and support for a new smartphone companion app.

A full suite of active safety features carries over, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The facelifted 2022 MG ZS EV is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in the first half of this year, indicating first arrivals by the end of June 2022. Stay tuned to Drive for all the latest.
