The first copy of the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III Black Edition book – signed by racing legend Allan Moffat – has sold for a record sum of $16,000 to raise money for Dementia Australia.
Motor racing legend Allan Moffat has helped raise $16,000 for Dementia Australia after the first copy of the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III Black Edition Register – with his signature on it – sold at auction last week for a record sum.
The book originally cost $351 but the author – automotive historian Ross Vasse –made the first Black Edition available for auction.
Moffat, a four-time Bathurst winner, helped establish the Ford Falcon GT as a hero of its era with back-to-back wins in 1970 and 1971 – but missed out on a third win in 1972 after a young Peter Brock driving a Holden Torana scored his first Bathurst victory.
Now aged in his early 80s, Moffat is dealing with health issues but makes rare public appearances for charitable causes.
His signature on the Number One book will help fund research into mental health and ageing.
“This book has been a labour of love, and it’s endearing to know the auction proceeds from the first copy are being donated to help raise awareness to a good cause,” said the book’s author Ross Vasse.
There were four editions of the book, which documents in detail every single Ford Falcon Phase III ever built.
All copies of the book were sold out before the first one was printed.
The content inside all four editions is the same, however the covers are different and some are numbered and autographed.
QC Edition ($995, sold out): Hard cover. Only 25 individually numbered copies printed. Certificate of Authenticity personally signed by Ford factory race drivers Allan Moffat, Fred Gibson and John French.
Gold Edition ($580, sold out): Hard cover. Only 25 individually numbered, faux leather bound copies printed. Certificate of authenticity signed by Allan Moffat.
Black edition ($351, sold out): Hard cover. Only 300 individually numbered faux leather bound copies printed.
Blue edition ($275, sold out): Soft cover. Undisclosed number printed.
Copies of the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III Register are available as a reference book at state and national libraries as an article of historic significance.
However, as with all reference books, copies of the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III register aren’t be allowed to be removed from the libararies where they are being kept.
Automotive historian Ross Vasse spent 30 years sourcing Ford factory production records, police stolen car lists, and state registration data, to account for every one of the 300 examples of the Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III.
