Mahindra begins to manufacture Hero’s Optima electric scooter

The ever increasing popularity of electric vehicles in the country has made the biggest EV manufacturers – Hero Electric and Mahindra Group to form an alliance in order to conquer the future of electric mobility. The recently announced alliance between these two auto giants has now borne its first fruit as the company’s rolled out the first-ever Hero Electric Optima EV scooter from the Mahindra Group’s Pithampur factory.

The five-year strategic partnership between the brands worth around Rs 150 Crore will be working to promote and create multiple synergies to help drive EV adoption across the country. Under this collaboration, Mahindra Group will take on the responsibility of producing Hero’s electric bikes Optima and NYX at its Pitampur plant.

Hero Electric in addition to this partnership has also expanded its Ludhiana facility in order to fulfil its aim of producing more than a million electric vehicles per annum by the end of this year. The tandem of these two ventures will allow the country’s biggest EV two-wheeler producer to enable the adoption of a cleaner mode of transport in an expedited manner.

Additionally, this collaboration will also be a key factor in developing the platform approach to help electrification of the Peugeot Motorcycles portfolio. This is expected to bring significant value to both parties through optimization of costs, timelines, and shared knowledge in this dynamic, fast-growing global EV environment. The companies also stated that they will be creating a seamless channel of communication to aid knowledge sharing among the R&D teams to build new products and technologies with this partnership.

During the announcement, last month, Naveen Munjal, MD, Hero Electric said, “This coming together of two industry leaders is to further enhance the manufacturing capabilities to meet demand and utilize Mahindra Group’s robust supply chain to reach newer centres in the country. The long-term partnership will also see both the companies make the most out of each other’s deep knowledge of EVs and drive new product development in the next few years. We look forward to creating more synergies with them in the near future.”

While sharing his thoughts on the partnership, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director, Auto & Farm Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, “Peugeot Motocycles has ambitious plans in the EV mobility space in several regions of the world and particularly in Europe. This strategic partnership will bolster these efforts through joint development and a platform sharing approach leveraging the combined strengths of the two businesses.”
