Maruti Suzuki has started teasing the 2022 Baleno. The first teaser showcased the first-in-segment heads-up display. Now, the second teaser has been released. It shows the new touchscreen infotainment system. Maruti calls it SmartPlay Pro+ and it is larger than the current unit and has more functionality built into it. According to the rumours, the Baleno Facelift will launch on February 23rd.
The current infotainment system measures 7-inches in size and is called SmartPlay Studio. It has started to show its age when compared to the other infotainment systems in the market. The new infotainment system measures 9-inches so it is much larger. The infotainment system would also come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. As of now, we do not know whether they will be wireless or not. Moreover, this time the infotainment system is coming with Arkamys sound system which should increase the sound quality through the speakers.
It is divided into multiple segments that showcase different information. The first one is the Favourite numbers that you can dial, then there is music that is currently playing, then there is the time, date and day and finally, there is a vehicle information display that is integrated into the infotainment system itself. There are shortcut touch-sensitive buttons placed right below the screen.
We also get a glimpse of the headlamps and the tail lamps in the video. We can see that there are three dots like LED Daytime Running Lamps and a projector headlamp. The same three LED setup can also be seen in the tail lamp. Up-front there will also be a redesigned grille that is sleeker and looks sharp. The overall design of the premium hatchback now looks sportier and sharper when compared to the current generation that had a more flowy design and started to look old when compared to the rivals.
Baleno will be offered in four variants. There will be Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha. All the variants except the base Sigma variant will be offered with an automatic transmission. Speaking of the automatic transmission, the Baleno will no longer come with a CVT.
The manufacturer has decided to go for a 5-speed AMT instead of a CVT. So, the AMT might not be as smooth as the CVT but it will cost less. So, Maruti will be able to price the automatic transmission more aggressively than the rivals. This might work considering that the Indian market is slowly shifting towards automatic transmissions because of the convenience that they provide in city traffic.
The engine will still be the same 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated unit. It produces 90 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be standard on all variants. As of now, we do not know whether the manufacturer will offer the 1.2-litre VVT engine or not.
Maruti Suzuki has already started accepting pre-bookings for the Baleno. You can book it online through the website or by going to the dealership. The booking amount has been set to Rs. 11,000. The 2022 Baleno will be launching in the second half of February. It will be competing against Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza and the upcoming Citroen C3.
