Skoda’s 6 Launches For 2022

2021 was one of the most successful years in recent history for the Czech automobile manufacturer Skoda in India as the company reported a growth in triple digits. Skoda India registered sales of 23,858 units in 2021 that translated to a whopping 130 per cent growth over its tally of 10,387 in 2020. And to continue this momentum of massive success the company has also revealed that it will be initiating 6 launches scattered throughout 2022 that will include some new models along with updates to existing models.

Skoda also mentioned in the recent announcement that they are planning to triple their 2021 sales figures in 2022, with a count of around 70,000 units. The company plans to achieve this goal with an estimated sales of 2,500 units of the Kushaq and Slavia each, for the entirety of 2022 tallying up to 60,000 units which will contribute to a big chunk of the target. In addition, the rest of the models which are soon to undergo facelifts and new variant launches are expected to fill up the remaining sales to achieve the above-mentioned target.

Of the 6 launches, the first one from the Czech automaker is the Kodiaq facelift. The SUV will be getting a powertrain transplant from a 2.0-litre diesel to a 2.0-litre petrol engine, along with some exterior and interior tweaks. Skoda India is also expecting the upcoming premium SUV to hit a 100 units per month sales mark. Commenting on the sales expectations of the new petrol-powered Kodiaq, Zac Hollis, director sales, service and marketing, Skoda Auto India said, “We know we are entering a segment where diesel has a significant share and thus obviously we will only be looking at the sales from the petrol segment, and targeting about a 100 units per month.”

The second car in the lineup to be launched in 2022 will be the Skoda Rapid successor, the Slavia. The mid-size sedan will be the second model in the Skoda portfolio to make use of the MQB A0 IN platform, with the first one being the Kushaq. Hollis also added, “Slavia will be available at the dealership by February and launch will happen in March.” While apart from these two new vehicles, Skoda will also be adding some new trim levels to the existing models Kushaq, Octavia and Superb.

The company chief was also asked if there’s an EV launch in cards, to which Hollis replied, “We have electric vehicles in our global product portfolio and we may bring them but for at least till 2025 we don’t have any mass segment electric vehicles planned for India”

The company also briefed a little about the surge in the demand from the rural markets of India, with a growth of over 5 percent in a span of a single year. The company accredited this growth to the rapid expansion of the dealership network of the brand. Skoda has now more than 175 touchpoints in the country which meant that the brand grew its network by 50 percent in 2021 and in addition to this growth, the company is looking forward to bringing this tally up to 225 dealerships in 2022.

Skoda also touched on the subject of pre-owned car sales by revealing that they will be activating the ‘Certified Pre-Owned’ brand across all outlets in 2022. Additionally, they have also started the tie-ups with banks and financial institutions to grow their corporate sales front. As of now the company has recorded 127% growth in 2021 over 2020.
