Tata Motors releases first teaser of Altroz Automatic

Tata Motors has finally released the first teaser of the Automatic Altroz. People have been waiting for the automatic transmission of the Altroz since it was first launched. The teaser does not reveal much about the Altroz Automatic.

The teaser says that the Altroz Automatic will be unveiled on National Science Day. There are many references to science in the video. Then the teaser says “The Gold Standard of Automatics”. This is the tagline that Tata uses for the Altroz.

We also get the first look at the gear lever for the automatic transmission. We also get a look at the gear pattern and we can see that there is a manual mode. Moreover, there are tri-arrow elements on the gear stick itself.

Earlier spy shots, reveal that there will be a mode button behind the gear lever. It makes more sense for Tata Motors to offer a Sports Mode with an automatic gearbox. The Sports Mode is offered only on the iTurbo variants. So, it is expected that the automatic gearbox would be offered only with the more powerful turbocharged petrol engine.

It is a 1.2-litre turbocharged unit that produces 110 PS of max power and 140 Nm of peak torque. As of now, the engine is offered only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It gets two drive modes, there is City and Sports.

There is also a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It produces 86 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. It gets two drive modes, there is a City and Eco. The diesel engine is a 1.5-litre unit that produces 90 PS of max power and 200 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is the sole transmission option with all three engines of the Altroz.

The automatic transmission is expected to be a dual-clutch unit. It can be a 7-speed unit. According to media reports, the DCT gearbox would be sourced from Punch. It is called DT-1 and is designed keeping compact cars in mind. The weight of the Altroz automatic will be 20 kgs more than the manual variant. The DT-1 DCT gearbox supports a torque output of up to 200 Nm. This gearbox is supposed to be more affordable than the other DCTs and torque converter automatic gearboxes. However, we would have to wait for the official launch for the prices of the Altroz Automatic.

There is a possibility that the same DCT gearbox also ends up doing duty in the Nexon compact SUV. The Nexon is also using the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the Altroz iTurbo. However, in Nexon, the engine is in a higher state of tune. The same engine produces 120 PS of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque. Because the torque output is 170 Nm, the DT-1 transmission should be compatible with the Nexon too.

The DSG gearbox would be better than the 6-speed AMT that Tata offers in the Nexon. You can the petrol as well as the diesel engine with the AMT transmission. As standard, it gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.
