Tata Nexon CNG Spied; Will compete with upcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG

Tata has started 2022 with a bang by launching the much-awaited CNG-powered versions of its compact offerings, the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan. However, it seems that Tata Motors is not going to stop there itself. The test mule of Tata Nexon was spotted leaving a CNG pump in Pune recently. While Tata is yet to comment on the upcoming car yet, the new spotting strongly suggests that Tata is working on the Nexon CNG as well.

The official test mule of Tata Nexon was spotted by a TeamBHP member RavenAvi. He claimed that this particular red-coloured Nexon was leaving a CNG-filling station. In the picture shared by the user, we can see that the Tata Nexon has a red-coloured number plate, which is generally used by automakers for testing purposes on open roads.

Tata Motors is already in an aggressive mode for the Indian car market, and the recent launches of Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG say that the homegrown carmaker is bullish on its strategy for CNG-powered cars. The next compact offerings which can be added to this lineup are Nexon, Altroz and Punch. The Nexon is the oldest of the three has the possibility of getting the option of CNG-powered variants in its lineup before the end of 2022.

Nexon to become the only car with four fuel options

If this happens, the Tata Nexon will become the only car in the Indian car market to be offered in four fuel options petrol, diesel, CNG and electric. The Tata Nexon CNG was spotted even before during its test runs in India. However, in those sightings, the car was completely covered in thick camouflage.

Currently, the Tata Nexon is available in two engine options, apart from the all-electric version. While the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 120 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque, the 1.5-litre diesel engine makes 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque.

In all likelihood, the Tata Nexon CNG will be available for the 1.2-litre petrol engine. The engine will suffer from a drop in power and torque figures due to the engine tune to suit the CNG fuel.

For the Nexon CNG too, Tata Motors will plonk in a CNG tank in its boot compartment, which will significantly eat its boot space. However, unlike in the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG, there will be a small amount of boot space that can be used for carrying small luggage, as the boot space of Nexon is already quite good at 350 litres. The Nexon CNG will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and will compete with the upcoming Maruti Brezza CNG.
